What is Respiratory Physiotherapy?

Respiratory Physiotherapy (also known as Chest Physiotherapy or Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy) is a specialised area of physiotherapy that helps people with breathing problems or lung conditions improve their respiratory function and quality of life.

What Happens in Respiratory Physiotherapy?

Respiratory physiotherapy helps improve breathing and clear the lungs. During a session, a physiotherapist might:

bullet-orange.pngUse airway clearance techniques to help clear mucus or phlegm from the lungs (e.g. huffing, coughing techniques).

bullet-orange.pngUse positioning (like lying in certain ways) to help drain mucus from specific parts of the lungs—this is called postural drainage.

Long COVID – Support with breathlessness, fatigue, pacing, and breathing retraining

If you’ve been struggling with breathlessness, coughing, or fatigue since having COVID, you’re definitely not alone. Many people find their symptoms hang around long after the infection is gone — something often called Long COVID.

That’s where respiratory physiotherapy can really make a difference.

It’s a type of physio that focuses on your breathing and lung health. A lot of people with Long COVID develop unhelpful breathing patterns, or lose confidence to be active again — and that’s completely understandable. Our job is to help you retrain your breathing, rebuild your stamina, and get back to feeling more like yourself.

Some of the main ways respiratory physiotherapy can help include:

Long COVID recovery can be frustrating, but you don’t have to tackle it alone. With the right support and a bit of patience, your breathing and fitness can absolutely improve.
