An ancient form of treatment, acupuncture developed over thousands of years and is used within modern physiotherapy as part of an integrated approach to pain and inflammation management. At our acupuncture clinic we use this treatment to stimulate the body’s own healing chemicals to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation.

There is a wealth of evidence for the use of acupuncture as a means of reducing pain via the stimulation of the brain and spinal cord. This treatment causes the production of natural pain relieving chemicals including endorphins, melatonin (which promotes sleep) and serotonin (which promotes feelings of wellbeing). Through these chemicals acupuncture, acupressure and electro-acupuncture all augment the repair mechanisms and accelerate recovery. This initial treatment can often alleviate symptoms to allow the introduction of other physiotherapy treatments including exercise, muscle strengthening and rehabilitation to achieve more effective results.

Our physiotherapists are well trained and have a sound research and evidence base for the use of acupuncture as a treatment. Based at our treatment centre, the physiotherapist will utilise single use, pre-sterilised, disposable needles of varying widths, lengths and materials to pierce the skin at the acupuncture points. Acupuncture needles are very fine compared to an injection needle (the same width as human hair) and cause minimal pain. The therapist will determine the locations of the acupuncture points based on the individual’s assessment. A number of these small needles may be used at each treatment and are typically left in position for 20-30 minutes for maximum benefit.

Our physiotherapists are registered with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and have undergone rigorous training with regular educational updates. Acupuncture is a very safe procedure when carried out by our fully qualified professionals.
