Elbow pain can turn simple tasks into frustrating ones. Lifting a bag, making a cup of tea, opening jars, gripping gym equipment, typing, or carrying shopping can all become uncomfortable when the elbow is irritated. What often starts as a mild ache can gradually become harder to ignore, especially if it begins to affect work, exercise, or sport.

At Xcel Health, we regularly assess and treat elbow pain, including tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, overuse injuries, and gym-related strains. Physiotherapy can help identify the exact cause of your symptoms and guide the right treatment so you are not left resting it repeatedly without real improvement.

What causes elbow pain?

Elbow pain may be caused by tendon irritation, muscle overload, joint stiffness, repetitive strain, or pain referred from nearby areas such as the neck or shoulder. This is why a proper assessment is important. The pain may be in the elbow, but the contributing factors are not always limited to that area.

Common causes include:

• Tennis elbow.

• Golfer’s elbow.

• Repetitive gripping or lifting.

• Gym or racket sport overload.

• Manual work or repetitive arm use.

• Joint irritation after injury.

• Neck or shoulder-related referral.

• Nerve irritation affecting the arm.

Tennis elbow is especially common and often affects people who do repetitive tasks at work, use tools, spend long periods typing, or train heavily in the gym.
